Er ontstaat regelmatig veel heisa rond kerkelijk-ethische uitspraken in de context van de hedendaagse geneeskunde. Denk maar aan de debatten over aids, medisch begeleide voortplanting, stamcelonderzoek, orgaandonaties, palliatieve sedatie, euthanasie De hoogste kerkelijke gezagsdragers gaan meer en meer de weg op van de restauratie. Ze ontmoedigen hiermee de ontelbare christelijk geïnspireerde hulpverleners die zich met grote zin voor verantwoordelijkheid inzetten in de zorgsector. Gelovige artsen en verpleegkundigen, alsook christelijk geïnspireerde beleidsmakers in de zorg, ervaren de houding van hedendaagse kerkelijke leiders als wereldvreemd. Niet zelden keren ze zich dan ook af van het instituut Kerk. Paul Schotsmans is ervan overtuigd dat het christendom een rijke bron van inspiratie vormt voor een menswaardige en dynamische hulpverlening. Hij hoopt met zijn boek In goede handen gestalte te geven aan deze dynamiek en zo de eeuwenoude traditie van goede zorg voor de kwetsbare medemens centraal te stellen. Hij wil hiermee alle gelovigen die zich open van geest inzetten in de zorg, een hart onder de riem steken.

Daniel Callahan helped invent the field of bioethics more than forty years ago when he decided to use his training in philosophy to grapple with ethical problems in biology and medicine. Disenchanted with academic philosophy because of its analytical bent and distance from the concerns of real life, Callahan found the ethical issues raised by the rapid medical advances of the 1960s--which included the birth control pill, heart transplants, and new capacities to keep very sick people alive--to be philosophical questions with immediate real-world relevance. In this memoir, Callahan describes his part in the founding of bioethics and traces his thinking on critical issues including embryonic stem cell research, market-driven health care, and medical rationing. He identifies the major challenges facing bioethics today and ruminates on its future. Callahan writes about founding the Hastings Center--the first bioethics research institution--with the author and psychiatrist Willard Gaylin in 1969, and recounts the challenges of running a think tank while keeping up a prolific flow of influential books and articles. Editor of the famous liberal Catholic magazine Commonweal in the 1960s, Callahan describes his now-secular approach to issues of illness and mortality. He questions the idea of endless medical "progress" and interventionist end-of-life care that seems to blur the boundary between living and dying. It is the role of bioethics, he argues, to be a loyal dissenter in the onward march of medical progress. The most important challenge for bioethics now is to help rethink the very goals of medicine.

Le 7 juillet 2011 était promulguée la loi n° 2011-814 relative à la bioéthique, point d'aboutissement de longs débats parlementaires enrichis des contributions produites par une mission d'information et des Etats généraux de la bioéthique qui avaient pour ambition : - de réexaminer les dispositions issues des premières lois de bioéthique de 1994 et 2004 à l'aune des progrès accomplis ou espérés dans le champ de la médecine et des sciences de la vie, - d'apprécier si l'évolution des moeurs et des modes de vie imposait de modifier certains des principes structurants posés par ces lois. Sur un point comme sur l'autre, les débats ont été riches et la réforme modeste, prudente. En effet, la révision de la loi de bioéthique a permis de vérifier que les principes et l'architecture de ce droit avaient parfaitement résisté à l'épreuve du temps et ne nécessitaient pas d'être retouchés en profondeur. Ceci a conduit le législateur à autoriser la ratification de la Convention sur les droits de l'homme et la biomédecine, dite convention d'Oviedo, signée par la France le 4 avril 1997. Dès lors, le 13 décembre 2011, M. Leonetti, ministre des Affaires européennes, déposait à Strasbourg les instruments de ratification de cette importante convention (reproduite en annexe de l'ouvrage). Ce livre s'attache à rendre compte des questions soulevées au cours du processus législatif et à présenter les réponses apportées.

Can the Hippocratic and Judeo-Christian traditions be synthesized with contemporary thought about practical reason, virtue and community to provide real-life answers to the dilemmas of healthcare today?
